I Learned To Let Go At 50 — And Everything Changed
The Simple Practice That Helped Me Release Years Of Pain
The Weekly Compass - Letting Go
It has to be learning how to let go!
As I was thinking about what to write about for this week’s Compass, I thought about what lesson has had the biggest impact on my happiness.
From the time we are little children we learn that there are things to let go of. It can be a relatively small thing like toys we no longer play with, or it could be something bigger like falling out with a friend.
Once we reach adulthood though there are often things that have built up that we find it hard to let go of.
We may cling onto that friend who has moved on to someone else, we may suddenly realise that our parents did not actually give us what we needed emotionally or even physically.
It can start to feel like we are carrying weight around with us as these pieces of baggage that we don’t really need stay with us.
Keep reading to get some tips on things that helped me get rid of some rather heavy baggage that I needed to offload.
This article is for people who want a short inspirational read at the beginning of the week from someone who has tried all the tools and knows which ones work to change what needs changing in your life.
A Quote to Start the Week
“Accept yourself, love yourself, and keep moving forward. If you want to fly, you have to give up what weighs you down.”
― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
A Simple Practice
Sit down. Close your eyes. Take two deep breaths.
Ask yourself:
What am I finding it hard to let go of?
The first thing that pops into your mind is probably the thing that is holding you back.
Get a pen and paper or use notes on your phone / device and write about it. Write whatever comes into your mind. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar. The idea is just to get it out of your head and start the letting go process.
Don’t underestimate, the power of this simple practice. I use it regularly and have been able to let go of many hurts and disappointments that were holding me back.

Book to Read This Week
The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer
“There is nothing more important to true growth than realizing that you are not the voice of the mind – you are the one who hears it.”
One Thing To Do
Be honest with yourself about what you are not letting go of. This is the most important first step.
This Week’s Compass Reminder:
You don’t have to do it all at once. You can just start small, but, you must start if you want change.
Do you want to make changes in your life? Sometimes all the support we need is to know we are not alone. Let me hold your hand on this journey until you can go it alone.
Same here. It’s never too late!
I love the practice of asking ourselves this. This helped me this morning, Georgia. Thank you.
