What I Learned About Prayer (That Changed Everything)
Not the kind you plead - the kind that rewires your beliefs, aligns with your subconscious, and actually shifts your life.
This week I’ve been reflecting on a concept that I once misunderstood entirely - prayer. Not the traditional kind, where we plead to an outside power, but the kind Joseph Murphy describes as scientific prayer, intentional thought that rewires the subconscious and calls in what we actually desire.
He says something that stopped me in my tracks:
“People often get the opposite of what they prayed for. Why? Because it’s not the thing believed in that brings results, it’s the belief itself that your subconscious responds to.”
That means your prayers, your desires, are answered not because of what you say, but how you think and feel when you say it.
And that’s what I’ve been thinking about this week.
What I’m Learning
Prayer, thought of this way, is less about asking and more about knowing. It’s not wishful thinking. It’s a clear mental picture, repeated with conviction, belief, and feeling.
Murphy writes, “Desire is prayer. In order for your world to change, you have to change your mind.”
And I’ve found that to be true.
When I started changing the inner dialogue from “please let this work out” to “thank you that this is already working for me,” I saw things begin to shift.
I’m not pretending things are perfect, I’m deciding to believe in a new reality and feeling as if it’s already true. That’s what activates change.
A Daily Practice
I’ve been starting each morning with a very simple meditation. After a couple of changing breaths, I see and say silently the words I AM as I breathe in and PEACE as I breathe out. It’s become a sort of prayer in itself. It helps me quiet the noise and focus my energy on what I’m calling in.
I sit still and feel the result I want, not the lack of it. The peace, the gratitude, the confidence that it’s already done. And I picture it again before I fall asleep.
It’s not about forcing anything. It’s about trusting that my subconscious is always listening and creating.
When to Practice This
Anytime your thoughts start to spiral, when you feel like you're waiting for something to change or hoping for an answer, that’s the moment to pause and refocus.
I like to physically stop and be still, and take a couple of changing breaths.
Instead of begging or wishing, I go within feel the outcome I want. I Replace “What if this goes wrong?” with “What if this is working out better than I could have planned?”
Then I let that new thought take root.
Why It Matters
Most of us were never taught how powerful our own mind is. I know I never was.
We were told that prayer meant handing over control, but this kind of prayer gives it back.
It’s not about asking if we can have something. It’s deciding we already do, and letting our subconscious bring it into form.
If you’ve ever wondered why some people pray and things don’t shift, it might be because they’re praying from fear. The subconscious only acts on the dominant feeling. And if that’s fear or doubt, that’s what shows up.
Prayer works when we align our desire with belief.
