“Being brave enough to be a friend and have a friend is one of the ways I got through the hardest year of my life.” — Georgia Clare
When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to retreat into ourselves. Society praises independence, resilience, and “pushing through,” but the truth is, we’re not meant to do everything alone.
Strength isn’t just about standing tall - it’s also about knowing when to lean on others.
Asking for help is not a weakness. It’s a sign of self-awareness, a recognition that healing, growth, and even survival often require connection. We are human, and we heal in the presence of others.
This week, I’ve been reflecting on what it truly means to receive support and allow ourselves to be held when we need it.
This is something I had to learn to do and it took me losing everything that I thought I could count on to discover that I couldn’t do it alone. I always thought I could!
Mind: Healing Thoughts
A Quote:
“What is the bravest thing you've ever said? asked the boy.
'Help,' said the horse.
'Asking for help isn't giving up,' said the horse. 'It's refusing to give up.” ―Charlie Mackesy,The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse
Asking for help is one of the bravest things we can do.
This quote beautifully reminds me that seeking support isn’t a sign of weakness, it’s a refusal to give up, a declaration that I am / we are, worthy of care and connection.
Strength isn’t about struggling alone; it’s about knowing when to reach out and allow others to walk beside us.
What I’m Learning:
In my own journey, I’ve had to unlearn the belief that I should handle everything alone.
When my marriage ended, my instinct was to retreat, to prove I could “do it all.” But it was in those moments of reaching out, to family, friends, a mentor, even strangers who had walked a similar path, that I found my real strength.
There is immense power in being witnessed. In sharing your burdens. In saying, “I need support.”
Body: Nourishment for Renewal
Nourishing The Body:
Support isn’t always from people. The body needs other types of support too like proper nutrition.
When we are going through low times it can be easy to let this area slide, but the truth is that we need nourishing food just as much as we need supportive friends.
Eating well doesn’t have to be complicated, but I find that preparing meals with care is a way of looking after myself when I need a little extra support.
I like to remember some advice that a good friend gave me; care for yourself as you would care for one of your daughters if they were facing this, which means supporting myself with healthy nutrition.
A Simple Practice:
If you’re struggling, try this: Reach out to one person today. It doesn’t have to be dramatic or deep, just a text, a call, a coffee with a friend.
Allow yourself to be supported, even in small ways.
Unless you try this, you won’t know just how powerful it can be. Just knowing that someone cares enough to send you a message of support can mean the difference between barely getting through the day and feeling that you are not alone.
After all, you’d be that person to someone else, so today, allow yourself to need someone else.
Soul: Connection and Reflection
Books to Inspire:
The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown
Brené Brown explores how embracing vulnerability, asking for help, and letting go of perfectionism can lead to a more fulfilling, wholehearted life. She delves into the power of connection and how true strength comes from allowing ourselves to be seen and supported. The Synergy Game by Georgia Clare
I realised when my 34-year marriage fell apart that I would have to do something I’d never done before and that was to reach out and ask for help from my friends and family. Chapter 8, Circle of Strength, is all about that. I also talk about many other ways that I found support in the book.
A Meditation:
This week, I’ve been practicing Gratitude for Small Comforts.
It’s a gentle reminder that even in difficult times, there are moments of warmth, kindness, and connection that we can hold onto.
Music That Moves Me:
This is one of the most moving songs I’ve heard about support, comfort, and unwavering presence in difficult times.
Its gentle melody and heartfelt lyrics remind us that we don’t have to go through life’s struggles alone, there are people willing to stand beside us, to lift us up when we’re weary. We just have to let them!
Just like the message of this week’s theme, it’s a reminder that reaching out for help is not a weakness, but a way to allow love and support into our lives.
Whether we’re the ones offering a bridge or needing to cross one, this song reminds us of the importance of human connection and support for and from others.
A Question (or three) for you to ponder
We are not meant to walk this road alone. If you’ve been holding everything in, carrying it all by yourself, I encourage you to take that first step, and reach out, even in a small way. I did and it made all the difference to me.
You don’t have to do this alone.
When was a time you reached out for help, and how did it change things for you?
Do you find it difficult to ask for support? If so, what holds you back?
What’s one piece of advice or encouragement you would give to someone struggling to reach out?
See you next week!

Thank you Georgia. Beautiful as always.❤️
Learning how to create a support system was one of the most important things I did as I worked through my early years of depression. It isn't something my family of origin taught me ... they have always been there but in a complicated enmeshed way. Figuring out what support really means to me (to give and receive) changed my life.
