How I Rebuilt My Ability To Trust After Years Of Betrayal
Why Your Body Knows Who To Trust Before Your Mind Does
The Weekly Compass - Trust
What happens when the very people who should have taught us how to trust… are the ones who taught us to fear instead?
If that’s your story, you’re not alone.
I’ve lived it too, and I know that rebuilding trust isn’t about forgetting what happened.
It’s about learning to feel safe inside your own skin again.
Trust is one of the most fragile and delicate, yet vital parts of being human.
When it’s been broken, especially early in life by those who were supposed to protect us, or by someone we thought we could always count on, it can feel impossible to ever regain it again.
I know what it’s like to carry that weight. The constant questioning of people’s motives, the overthinking, the fear of being let down.
But without trust, we live half-lives.
We stay guarded, closed off, always waiting for the other shoe to drop.
The truth is, to live fully, we must be able to trust again, not blindly and thoughtlessly, but wisely, with discernment and courage.
To be truly free, we have to be able to trust.
A Quote to Begin the Week
“Trust yourself. You know more than you think you do.” — Benjamin Spock
This reminds me that our intuition is rarely wrong, we’ve just forgotten how to listen.
I’ve worked very hard over the years to hone my intuition and when I listen, it’s never wrong.
What I’m Learning
I’ve been thinking about how much we overcomplicate trust. We analyse people’s words, their behaviour, we play scenarios over and over in our heads.
But when I tune in quietly, my intuition always knows who feels safe and who doesn’t. It’s when I ignore that inner voice that I get into trouble.
I’ve learned that trust begins within. If I can trust myself, my instincts, my choices, my ability to handle whatever comes, I can extend that outwards without fear of making a mistake that will take me back to square one.
A Simple Practice
This week, try a short trust check-in:
Place your hand over your heart.
Think of someone in your life.
Notice what happens in your body - do you feel open and calm, or tense and unsettled?
Your body often tells you the truth before your mind does.
Nourishment for the Body
Trusting yourself also shows up in how you care for your body. So often we follow fad diets or external “rules,” but our bodies carry incredible wisdom.
Start small: before each meal, pause and ask yourself, what do I really need right now?
Sometimes it’s vegetables, sometimes it’s rest, sometimes it’s water.
Practising this, builds self-trust from the inside out.
