"You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day—unless you’re too busy. Then you should sit for an hour." – Zen Proverb
Life’s storms can feel never ending. When everything around us is falling apart, our minds race with questions, worries, and fears, leaving us feeling exhausted and overwhelmed, and rather lost.
When my world turned upside down, my brain wouldn’t switch off and I was constantly searching for answers to unanswerable questions, thoughts in my head whirling around.
Meditation gave me something I didn’t realise I needed, peace, even if just for 30 minutes.
A momentary escape from the chaos, where my mind could finally rest. And in that stillness, I found the strength to keep going, one day at a time.
This week, I want to share why meditation is not just a practice but a necessity when facing challenges.
Science is catching up to what ancient traditions have known for centuries, meditation heals.
Studies show it reduces stress hormones, calms the nervous system, and even rewires the brain.
Mind: Healing Thoughts
A Quote:
"The soul always knows what to do to heal itself. The challenge is to silence the mind." – Caroline Myss
Science backs this up. Research from Harvard Medical School found that meditation triggers the relaxation response, lowering stress levels and promoting emotional stability.
Another study in JAMA Internal Medicine showed that mindfulness meditation significantly reduces anxiety and depression.
It’s not just about feeling good in the moment, it’s about training the mind to respond differently to stress over time.
What I’m Learning:
I’ve been learning that meditation isn’t about ‘doing it right.’ It’s about showing up.
Some days, my mind won’t settle, but even then, just sitting in stillness makes a difference.
It teaches patience, presence, and trust.
The more I practice, the more I realise that peace isn’t something I have to search for - it’s already within me.
Body: Nourishment for Renewal
A Nourishing Meal:
When stress takes over, we often reach for comfort foods that do more harm than good.
This week, I’ve been focusing on simple, grounding meals, warming soups, herbal teas, and nutrient-dense foods that support the nervous system.
Try a chamomile or ashwagandha tea in the evening to naturally lower cortisol and bring a sense of calm to the body.
A Simple Practice:
If you’re struggling to meditate, start small.
Even just two minutes of deep breathing can shift your state of mind.
Close your eyes, take a deep breath in for four counts, hold for four, and exhale for four. Repeat.
This resets the nervous system and gives the mind a moment to rest.
Soul: Connection and Reflection
Books to Inspire:
Wherever You Go, There You Are by Jon Kabat-Zinn. A beautiful and accessible guide to mindfulness, this book teaches how meditation can help us handle life’s challenges with grace and awareness.
The Synergy Game by Georgia Clare
Chapter 3 in my book is all about meditation and my journey to it becoming a daily practice.
A Meditation:
This week, I’m sharing my Calm in the Chaos meditation. It’s designed for those times when the world feels overwhelming, offering a moment of stillness amidst the storm. Listen here: Calm in the Chaos Meditation.
Music That Moves Me:
Try listening to Spiegel im Spiegel by Arvo Pärt. It has a meditative, almost hypnotic quality that slows the mind and invites deep calm.
In a world that never stops demanding our attention, meditation is an act of self-preservation.
It’s not about escaping reality but about building the strength to face it with clarity and calm.
I’d love to hear, have you found peace through meditation during difficult times? Let me know in the comments.
See you next week!
